Xi'An City Walls

Xi'an City Walls

Xi'an is the capital city of Shaanxi province. It's where the Silk Road starts on its journey to the west, and it's where the Terracotta Army is located.

Xi'an was the capital of China during several dynasties. The first city wall was very large, some 25.7 km (15.97 mi) in length. Unfortunately, this wall was completely destroyed. A new wall with large and strong construction but a smaller area was built during the Ming Dynasty. The Ming wall is 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) around and is well preserved today. Many repairs have taken place over the years, but the basic construction is original.

You can walk atop the entire perimeter of the wall, or you can rent a bicycle and ride around. Along the outside of both the eastern and the western sides of the wall are nice parks for viewing the wall from the outside.
