The Ming Dynasty Great Wall follows the northern border of Ningxia.

Ningxia is a somewhat dry region. Its deserts include the Tengger Desert. It is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Average summer temperatures reach 17 to 24°C (63 to 75°F) in July and average winter temperatures fall to between -7 and -10°C (19 and 14°F) in January. Temperature extremes can reach 39°C (102°F) in summer and -30°C (-22°F) in winter. The day to night temperature variation can reach above 17°C (30.6°F), and is most pronounced in spring. Annual rainfall averages from 190 to 700 millimeters (7.5 to 27.6 inches), with more rain falling in the south of the region. Ningxia has one of China's lower average per-capita income levels. Ningxia has been called a museum of the Great Wall. It has many beautiful as well as interesting locations.

Ningxia has an area of 66,000 square kilometers (25,000 square miles). It has a population of about seven million people.
