Zhangjiakou was historically the main northern gate in the Great Wall for Europeans traveling along the Tea Road. The Zhangjiakou prefecture-level city has an area of 36,947 square kilometers (14,265 square miles) and a population of about 4.5 million. The Zhangjiakou urban area has a population of about half a million.

Zhangjiakou has long, cold, dry, and windy winters, and hot, humid summers. The climate is similar to that of Beijing but is colder.
